Skewl Stuff 2: Viking Character

Wow! It's been quite a while since my last post!
Before anything else, I would have to tell you a bit about what has been going on during the past weeks away from giving my blog some attention.
Last semester ended with a nice beach outing in Carmer together with my other Animation schoolmates! It was a great place to chill and swim-- a private rest house owned by our classmate's uncle-- the best part is we got the place for free!!! YES!! FREE!! All we had to spend for was our food and other needs-- which was as agreed by everyone --be taken from the funds we earned during our Intrams week.. Oh yeah!

Sadly, not all were able to pass all the subjects, some need to retake a few ones next year. And for us graduating students-- those who passed, we are quite anxious about this coming semester! It's our last! We have to hold and not give up! This is our final quarter! XD

Now back to my drawing post, here's another one from our digital essentials-- digital sketching exercises.
This plate is all about making our own Viking inspired Character Design. Vikings are kind of cool coz they have been notorious barbaric seafarers in the Northeastern European land and seas.

I had several references for the clothes, armor, weapons, etc, even how they look.

This character of mine has a good upright posture, indicating that he must be a leader amongst other vikings whom are commonly seen in a slightly leaned forward, our slight crouching position as if ready to lunge at anything anytime.I made the horns not twisted upright which is common among viking characters, this time I kind of thought that not all helmets in their time actually are upright. I chose a nice bright shade of ginger for his hair and axe as my weapon of choice that best fits this character.

I have to admit that I had tedious work done especially on the fur-took me long-- though it wasn't difficult. All for the reason of paintng them individually instead of customizing a brush that would make things work faster. I still have issues in painting drapery and metal. But I am happy I had gone this far. :)
Will be posting more drawings soon! Gotta make up for all those days not been able to post. Will be sharing about the next part of my semestral vacation too! till then! XD keep drawing!!

Skewl stuff 1: Character Design 1-- Female Assassin

This one is schoolwork. Our task was to create 2 designs from one original character design. I chose to create a female assassin, around mid 20s to early 30s, black hair, asian.

After doing some prelimary sketching, I finished up my lineart to make it ready for painting.

Then, I filled it out in grayscale first to distinguish the values and tones. Determining the source of light is very important here to help me create the shape of each form.

Afterwhich, I then now overlayed the colors and used complimentary colors similar to "asian dragon" colors or themes. I determined she should have black hair and kind of made it to blue black hair.

After being checked by our instructor (who's awesome by the way), he encouraged and advised me to reduce the outlines or make them thinner if possible to give it more solid look. He also advised me to use the entire range from black to white in my grayscale so that it would effectively give a 3d look rather than looking quite flat. He also taught that it is also important to know the kind of material fore each form so that it can help me determine the reflectivity or the glossiness of such form which is applicable to determining the tone transitions in my grayscale: such as the metals, leather, cloth, skin etc. each has its way of values.

Finally, I got the colors overlayed again and done some changes and cleaning.

Here's the summarized overview of what I have learned so far in digital painting. I had much fun in doing this, learned new things especially the tips from our instructors.

Maddy Portrait Process

This is the first portrait rendering I made entitled "Maddy" which I really credit first of all to my cousin Ed. My cousin is also an artist and in fact gave me a lot of tips in digital painting and stuff. He is also one of the great inspirations and supporters I had to carry on my ambition to become a great artist. Thank you Ed! ^__^

This is the original sketch made by Eddi.

A Tralala Birthday Wish List... (I actually have one?)

Hmmm... I always want a LOT of things... but I really don't covet to have 'em all. It just would be nice to have 'em. Mind you, these things that I want are mostly things that I also need! ^_^

Mutants

Do these girls look familiar to you?

Yes, I am featuring my sisters again! And what else have you noticed? (Aside from hey I'm there too!)
Yup, you're guessing it right! X-men characters! ^__^

The sketches were actually drawn on paper...scanned...then colored in photoshop :)
Still noob at coloring, but practicing is real fun for me ^___^ weeeheeee!!!

Early Colored Sketches

I always will be a traditional artist...a pencil artist to be exact. But I wanted to color my works. Before, I was content of black and white and gray, until, I knew that I really want to add more life to my drawings. So, below are few of my attempts to color my traditional pencil sketches, coloring them in adobe photoshop. I'm still a noob at it and obviously most of them don't have a a background- just all white.

As you can see, obviously my drawings are very into anime style, which is my comfort zone. But as they say, an artist must move out from one's comfort zone-- explore more. And so I will. :)

Black and White Portraits

It's important to have fun when you are practicing your skills! ^_^ When I discover a technique or style, I really try it several times, and my sisters and bestfriends are the usual models. Like for example on the following drawings, they are sketched portraits of my sisters and two of my bestfriends. Doing this was challenging in a way, I wanted to simplify the drawing, without too much detail, in fact, their faces especially the eyes are not too realistic. I chose to experiment on a grayscale and a large contrast of black and white with a few midtones here and there for forms. :) I really did enjoy these exercises.

Doodley Doo!

There's this childish side of me that I wanted to project, things that I liked as a child that I still carry until now ^___^ The drawings below are drawn in half sheets of bondpaper when I got bored during classes back in 2009.

Lolli Hour
I like sweets...dang...I am candidate for diabetes. Hopefully I won't get it! Nuuu!
This is simply a doodle of some of the sweet things I like.
I didn't include chocolate here. Chocolate is sacred!!!

My Earliest Digital Rendering

My earliest drawings were actually drawn in Paint. Yes the old Paint in Windows! But sadly I am not able to keep those old drawings, haha! I can still remember some of them in my mind. Now let me show you the earliest digital drawings I've retrieved from old storage.

This drawing of a girl with the vine is drawn in Pixia-- a free software I downloaded just so I could practice digital drawings. This was done around 2008. The sketch was done on April 15, using a marker on paper then after scanning, I added color. It took me a few days, since I can't use the family's PC for long hours at that time. Yep, this is one of the crappiest ones, but at that time, I felt so happy for this achievement. :)

Digital Sketch Journal

The primary purpose why I came up with this blog is to be able to make a journal of my drawings--not just any drawing I sketched, since I've been drawing since birth (just kidding), but digital drawings. This is to help me determine and see the progress I had in years of practice, my ups and downs, the lessons learns, the people and events that inspired me, and artists who influenced my learning all throughout.

"Imah Blaarghing Ahgeein!"...I mean.."I'm Bloggin' Again!"

This post simply just serves as something to be so-called "introduction". I really don't want to introduce everything essential about me this early. Things about me will be revealed as each entry is posted... so keep posted :)

Why "Blogging Again?"... that's because I am also a blogwriter on another blog but it's one in which it is a joint blog (more than one writer) with me and my closest friends. You're really really very welcome to check it out except that lately we had a break and everyone seemed to be tired of posting just yet. You see the other writers also have their own blogs. BUT!! But my friennds!! Our blog is still alive and it's very open to everyone!

I know some of you just skipped reading the stuff above
so here it is...http://experimental-theatre.blogspot.com/

So that's all for now.. :)
